Episode 91 – “Tone Rodriguez FCBD 2026”

Show notes: Heads up- this “Drawing Funny” episode #91 is our first “Explicit Content” warning for adult language usage, and may not be safe to listen to at work or around the kids.

Normally I avoid dropping F-bombs or just edit/bleep them out, but I just said “Fudge it!” and left them in for my interview with “Feral” and “Stray Dogs” comic artist Tone Rodriguez.

I caught up with Tone out at 901 Comics East during his signing (and drawing) appearance there for FCBD. Discussed the Image Comics books he’s been working on with Tony Fleecs (pronounced like “fleece”). Haven’t seen Tone for about 20yrs..! He’s half the man he used to be when I met him at the Phoenix Cactus Con (now Phoenix Fan Fusion), and I’m probably a good 40lbs lighter than then myself.

In the news section I discuss this year’s Free Comic Book Day in the Memphis area and my adventures around town with Nicki last Saturday, plus lots of other art and event news in the mid-south.

I also did a couple quick interviews with local artists That Katie Jones and Ryan Ladner at this month’s Mid-South Cartoonists Association Monthly Dinner Gathering at Garibaldi’s Pizza (1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm near the U of M). Katie has an art show out at Playhouse on the Square this month, and Ryan is working on his “Memphis VS Zombies” comic series and will be at the upcoming Beale Street Monster Club’s “Bigfoot On Beale” celebration upstairs at A. Schwab’s. I’ll have a table at the event, too.

My “Featured Creatures” art show reception will be on June 5, 2026 from 5-7pm in 2nd Floor West gallery at Playhouse on the Square – 66 South Cooper Street, Memphis, TN 38104. There’s another artist, Angi Cooper, having their reception the same night/time in the downstairs gallery. My art show runs from June 6-August 2, 2026 and is in conjunction with Playhouse’s production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street“, June 12 – July 12, 2026. All art shows on display are free to attend during Playhouse’s normal business hours.

I’ll have several scare-brushed Monsterpieces, some “Scared Silly” marker illustrations, and wood panel acrylic maker paintings on display and for sale. Whatever doesn’t sell there I’ll have at the Memphis Monster Market in October, and the Memphis Monster Con in November.
