Episode 78 – “MSCA May Days & More”

Show notes: For this episode I try and catch everyone up on what’s coming up for the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and Memphis events scene- especially next month in May.

This coming week is Free Comic Book Day and Rogues Gallery Rising on Saturday, Star Wars Day on Sunday, Cartoonists Day on Monday, MSCA monthly dinner gathering on Tuesday, Con Cards Gaming Night and Ave Maria Home visit on Wednesday- plus lots more later in the month like the MidSouth Mega Con and Memphis Library Con.

This summer the Metropolis Superman Celebration and the MSCA art show at Playhouse On The Square are in June. This fall Memphis Comic Expo returns in September, Memphis Comic Expo in November (for their 15th year), the MSCA will have a Halloween art show (“Drawn Of The Dead“) at Germantown Community Theatre, and another later in December and January at the Jewish Community Center.

Also, our 12th issue of the MSCA zine “The Good, The Bad and the Sketchy” snacky/food themed issue is on its way back from the printer. We’ll be assembling it at our May 6th dinner gathering at Garibaldi’s, so if you’d like to help slide by a little early. We’ll have staplers but need extra hands to help organize and fold the pages. Our 13th issue is scheduled to go to press in October and be ready for the GCT Halloween art show.

Nicki and I have been busy with yardwork, and had a lot of fun going to the recent Earth Day/Hernando Farmers Market/Spring Art Festival on Courthouse Square in Hernando, MS. I’ve got some art for sale. and free MSCA and Drawing Funny swag available at the DeSoto Arts Council in Hernando, MS. Slide by if you’re in the area, or stop by Comics & Collectibles or The Cellar Table Top Games & Comics if your out and about on FCBD. We also have a swag table at our monthly dinner meetings. Many will remember all the years that Bob Kimball was with us MSCA’ians, creating the most fabulous poster for “So Scary It’s Funny” art show in Overton Square many years ago and his (in)famous comic “Dr. Lovemonkey.” On March 15, 2025, Bob shared:

Friends, I hope you’re safe, warm, and dry as you read this. I’m sorry to say I have some bad news. I have recently learned that I have stage four cancer. I will start radiation this week. The cancer is in my brain and in my lungs.

Even with health insurance, the bills will be staggering. Anything you can give to help will be very much appreciated.
